Last
year Adult Swim picked up a series from the BBC that fit
their sensibilities perfectly. The brainchild of Robert
Popper and Peter Serafinowicz (Spaced, Shaun of the
Dead and the upcoming CG remake of Yellow Submarine),
Look Around You mocks British educational programs
of the sixties and seventies.
At least,
I think that's what it does. I'm just old enough
to have vague memories of watching films in elementary school
of similar quality, and I grew up in California. It's a
subtly strange show, covering a variety of subjects over
several ten minute episodes.
Better
than being strange -- though that rates highly for me --
it's also hilarious.
On Tuesday,
July 20, BBC Home Video will release Season One
(or Series 1, as it's known in the UK) for U.S. consumption.
So you have time to catch up before Comic-Con, where Popper
and Serafinowicz will be appearing on Thursday,
July 22 at 5 p.m. in Room 6A.
We're
on tap for some extended coverage of these two brilliant
men, but we thought we'd do some prep work for their appearance
and initiate those unfamiliar with them. Below is an episode
from the series, with a special guest appearance by writer/director/science
enthusiast Edgar Wright, who's also appearing at Comic-Con
to promote Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Not
that he really needs our help promoting that, it's
just a reminder that Wright thinks these guys are hilarious,
too. As does Matt Groening of The Simpsons and
Futurama and many, many more people that aren't
just me.
