Even Alan
Cumming owes Cockrum a debt...

Last
week, we ran a piece
about '70's giant Dave Cockrum falling terribly ill. Cliff
Meth, who contacted us in the first place, called this
afternoon to say that Cockrum's health has improved somewhat.
He's still hospitalized, but he's no longer in critical condition.
To help
with the artist's hospital bills, Meth is in the process of
organizing a tribute book. Among the notables involved are
Neal Adams, Harlan Ellison, Len Wein and Murphy Anderson,
with a special introduction by Stan Lee. You can find out
about that at Aardwolf
Publishing.
But the
group is taking it one step further. One of the reasons that
Cockrum's financial situation has gotten so precarious is
a story we've heard too many times. He created a popular character
that a company has made a LOT of money on, including putting
him on film, without ever paying Cockrum any residuals.
Yeah,
it happened to a lot of writers and artists in days gone by.
But the character Cockrum created, Nightcrawler, was actually
his own. He'd tried to introduce Kurt Wagner into The Legion
of Superheroes before leaving DC for Marvel.
Tomorrow,
Adams and Ellison are officially going to ask Joe Quesada,
as the current editor-in-chief of Marvel, to make it right.
Meth hopes to be able to report the results soon. Check him
out at Silver
Bullet Comics for updates.
