Saturday, fandom got the news that the veteran comics artist
Gene Colan had been hospitalized with liver failure. Apparently,
he had not been well for some time, and so as unfortunate
as this is, there was a little time to mobilize plans to help
Mr. Colan with his medical costs.
As has
been noted time after time, the comics industry is often
harshest on those old-time giants that really built it,
and Gene Colan is no exception. A pioneer in the field,
bringing a whole new level of cinematic language into comics
with his work during the Silver Age Marvel, Colan will always
matter to me because of his brilliant work on The Tomb
of Dracula and Howard the Duck (that would
be the original, good series).
In recent
years, Colan has been very active on the convention circuit,
though not as active drawing comics.
Clifford
Meth (writer of IDW's subversive Snaked) will be
spearheading efforts to help with Gene's bills. First of
all, any book of Meth's that you purchase from Aardwolf
Publishing will see the full proceeds go to Colan.
Soon,
Meth and a host of other comics greats will be contributing
to an auction at ComicLink.com,
to benefit Colan, of course. Details are kept far more up
to date at Clifford
Meth's blog. If you're a creator who would like to donate
something to the auction, you can find information there
about doing so.
Please
do.
